Raise your hands if you’re an 80s pop fan? Don’t try and pretend you’re not, I don’t know anyone who doesn’t have a soft spot for a bit of 80s pop! Let me introduce you to Cloak...
Cloak are a synth based electronic duo from the South of England, and as someone with a huge soft spot for 80s pop, despite being a 90s child, I love their sound – it’s the 80s music I grew up with, with a little bit of modern magic.
Band members, Kevin and Dean, have combined their synth sound with dance-y beats, electronica and the absolute best of the 80s sound.
‘Mr Loneliness’ at first, always leaves me with a mental image of Boy George at his prime, and then the more I listen the more I can’t decide if its Boy George or Simon le Bon with Duran Duran I see. Polar opposites I know – and then the beat kicks in and I’m back in 2012.
‘Absolutely’, despite the lyrics of “you pushed me down, absolutely...you watched me fall, absolutely” is a perfect 80s slow dance. It’s bittersweet and a chang in pace from the other songs on Cloak’s profile, but for me it is most definitely a good change.
‘Infatuation’ is the song that shows me the most that Cloak are all about modernising the 80s sound and not regurgitating it. The 80s inspiration is there, as it is in every Cloak song I’ve heard, but this one is definitely the most like a modern dance track, it sounds like a floor filler and I like to turn it up loud!
I’ve saved my absolute favourite song from Cloak’s current profile until last. ‘Set Me Free’ features haunting lyrics and melodies and sounds hypnotising. This is the song that reminds me of Hurts, who I am also a huge fan of, and always makes me feel outraged that Cloak don’t have more people listening to them – they definitely deserve it!
