Red Barrio are an Ambient Reggae Dub Band based in Manchester, mixing Venezuelan, British and Latin rhythms to create a unique atmospheric sound.
Each of their tracks gives the listener a different look towards Reggae as well as Dub itself. With all the varied rhythms Red Barrio has mastered the skill of creating a unique crossbreed of music. With influences from Venezuelan rhythms, Red Barrio have managed to make music which still has got the ‘reggae’ feel but still has that tempo of typical fast paced Venezuelan music which makes the listener want to dance as well and relax to the beat.
Their track ‘Condor’ is an example of how they ave managed to still keep it reggae however merging that fast paced ambient drum pattern which gives the track that pace and with the atmospheric noises in the background of the track, you get lost in it as if it was a wild jungle.
Their track ‘El Emperador’ is the perfect example of Reggae in its purest form; catchy bassline, heavy dub beat, ambient and a Rastafarian speaking over the track to give the listener that journey back to the roots of the birth of ‘reggae’.
I personally prefer the reggae based material they play simply because when I first listened to ‘El Emperador’, the whole song absorbed me. Its old school reggae feel reminded me of Bob Marley’s early work...
