Derbyshire photographer Melissa Downhill Published on Wednesday, 13 June 2012 09:35
Based in Derbyshire’s spa town, Buxton, Melissa Downhill is a fashion photographer with a difference. With a modern yet natural style, her photography manages draw on the highlights of a scene, capturing it in all its glory. What we’re left with is images straight from a modern day version of a classic fairytale.
Location plays a key role in Melissa’s photography. She believes that it’s this that brings an image to life, providing it with a base for personality and intimacy. “There are so many great places around from old buildings and coutrysides, to beaches and cities. The best canvas you can have is the world around you.”
In fact, in some instances Melissa’s work could be likened to that of a wildlife photographer. Making models and clients feel comfortable in their chosen environment is something that she prides herself on – and the result is noticeable. These models look as though captured in their natural habitat, the poses and expressions are so natural in the wild environment.
On top of this is the skill presented through image manipulation. Although often portraying raw unprocessed nature, Mellissa pays high attention to detail while editing, which she sometimes does to create conceptual imagery or photography which meets magazine editorial standard.
Melissa’s portfolio is impressive, ranging from fashion and beauty shoots to wedding photography, to images capturing the playful innocence of children playing in the wild. Her ability to capture a moment full of character is evident in all.
