Read My Lips… Published on Wednesday, 15 August 2012 15:23
HELLO Jessie J, I am LOVING your crazy lip art! This is a trend that has taken the world by storm, and I personally see no problem with that. Like the craze of nail art, can you blame us for trying to come up with new and innovative ways of expressing ourselves? Although I haven’t dared try to take things to the same level of art as Jessie J, I have managed to create a pink polka dot pout with my limited lipstick collection.
Make up artist Toni Elissa Baker has certainly perfected the notion of subtle yet eye catching lip art. In her work she’s used rhinestones, gold foil and a number of other materials to create some pretty incredible looks. This is totally acceptable for the glossy pages of magazines and for the likes of celebs, but what do we think of these efforts making their way into everyday-normal-person make up?
I’m in two minds about the whole thing. On one hand, I’m all for the natural look and I feel that a lot of young girls wear way too much make up to the extent that I feel like I’m imprisoned in Wonka’s Chocolate Factory, but on the other I adore it when people get creative with their fashion, hair and make up. Provided the rest of one’s make up is subtle and simple, why not give your lips some 3D décor? It could be anything when you really think about it. I’d love to see what a make up artist like Miss Baker could do with materials like leaf skeletons, metallic foils, feathers, glitter or even chainmail! The list of possibilities is potentially endless.
What do you guys think? Is crazy lip art a phenomenon that should be confined to the edgy world of couture fashion, or should we all have a go at getting a little creative? Hit me up with some comments, I’d love to hear your thoughts on the matter. In the meantime, definitely check out the rest of Baker’s portfolio because her work really is quite beautiful.
