Interview

For those yet to discover you, how would you describe Byungmun Seo?

Byungmun Seo’s collection is displayed in unconventional use of garment pattern, as well as in giving new uncommon meaning by creative pattern cutting. The clothes are to be functional first of all, but also to conceive a style that reflects my mood and state of mind: poetic, sensitive and melancholic. My inspiration exudes a sense of discreet chic, the essence of timeless style, drawn on a monochromatic, poetic expression through experimental pattern cutting. The limit of colour on the collection (Palette of black, grey and touches of pure whites) allows to mix all pieces with each other and to create new, personalized looks. It also can accentuate the contrast of high textured fabric showing diversity and harmony.

What makes Byungmun Seo different from other collections?

My initial idea always begin from depicting human's nature creating a story and then interpret the story in my own perspective to develop the story into my work. It is to derive a new concept from the interpretation and apply it to the development of design and through this process, I conceive distinct development of design to create conceptual characteristics of the collection. These characteristics can be seen in unconventional pattern cutting and unique mixture of textures that can make my collection special from other collection. So, I would say that my endeavour to create my own story can make the collection different from others.

Where does your inspirations come from?

I always enjoy the process of making a story and theory in my own perspective after then, develop it into fashion design. This is because I think it is an only way to create my own identity and look. For my 2012 A/W collection, I perceived new characteristics of pattern cutting to find another self of garment pattern in my imagination. Each garment pattern can be seen in an unexpected place that does not belong to them creating new silhouette and meaning. With this idea, I wanted to derive a beauty aroused by unexpected and unfamiliar meeting of garment pattern with new construction of pattern cutting.

What music are you listening to at the moment?

It depends on my mood. When I am gloomy, I listen to Gotan project. When I am joyful, listen to Paul van dyk, Tiesto.

Is there anyone you would love to collaborate with?

I like working with creative artists who have something I do not have or I cannot have. I always believe that designers need inspirations from various other areas to make up something they do not have and they cannot find. My initial concept for my work is basically based on my research, experience and imagination but these are more like realistic than artists who follow only their instinct and abstract image and express that in new way. So, I want to meet those artists to expand my imagination. If anyone know those artists, please let me know.

What do you have planned for the future?

I would like to be able to continue my collection so I will find the way that can support me to carry on showing my collection. I believe there will be many opportunities waiting for me but for now, I just want to start what I can do first like developing my idea for next collection.
