How important is social media for a freelancer?

Published, 4 years ago

At fashion Rider, we believe there is no better advice than professional advice. Whether you need pointers on PR, accounts and so on we want to be who you turn to in your time of need.

So we have spoken to a number of professionals and agencies in different fields to collect their views on a number of questions you might have. Here, we have spoken to Gareth Clements at Rumpus PR to see what their experience had been and give us some insight into a number of different topics.

Social media has taken over the internet like wildfire. When you think of PR it was typical to think of print press releases and media kits, however social media is becoming just as equally important. But why is it important to PR? As Gareth explains in the interview, social media is one of the main elements of their proposals as oppose to 10 years ago. There are a number of reasons why, with the fact that the digital revolution has brought ‘a magnifying glass on accountability’ being one of them. This means that ‘the digital sector had instant accountability and found easier ways to measure the effects of their actions’ which as a result, impacted PR and ‘how clients view the discipline’. With this, PR needs to work with social media with issues such as reputation and brand building, that without it could cost you that client.

How has the PR industry changed in the last 5 years and how does it affect the client?

There is a lot of debate regarding our sector and the changes that have occurred over the last decade. It is true to say ten years ago we never really talked about social media in our proposals, nowadays it is one of the main elements. What the digital revolution has brought, is a magnifying glass on accountability. The digital sector had instant accountability easy ways to measure the effects of their actions, this really had an impact on PR and how clients view the discipline. The PR industry was a little slow to react and new aggressive digital companies were in vogue as they knew how to attract business through digital initiatives. PR never really went away, but it is definitely back on the agenda. The long term benefits of PR and its brand building capabilities are a complement to shorter term digital lead generation tactics, the best agencies are using both to service the clients need for bringing in business and creating a reputation at the same time.

How important is social media for a freelancer?

I would say it is fundamental on many levels, freelancers have to juggle, and social media gives them a chance to maintain their connections.

What do you value highly within your client relationships?

We have gained a level of trust with our clients, because we make ourselves available and accountable. We always make sure we fully understand our clients’ requirements and we never promise something that we cannot deliver. This simple value has worked for many years and is one of the reasons why we lose very few clients to something under our control.

One final note:

Whether you are choosing a new accountant or web designer to work with Fashion Rider always recommends you do your research and consider all your options.

If you’re still unsure don’t forget Fashion Rider is here to help. Please don’t hesitate in getting in contact and let us take the stress out of if for you. Also if there are any different areas we can help in just let us know.
